In the meanwhile, enjoy these art history-related music videos. The first is a rapid montage of many of western art’s most famous paintings. This debuted in 1968 on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and is considered one of the first music videos. The second is much more recent and uses digital technology to place will.i.am. and other contemporary entertainers into many of western painting’s most famous works.
How is art history a major part of popular culture?

The first music video was captivating, with the musical background enhancing the beauty and the painting were moving fast enough to make a movie. It was difficult to figure some of the painting but I assume that most were a product of the 14th century up to the renaissance.
The second music video by will.I.am was another good one as he was strategically placed along with other people in the paintings, giving it a different feel and gave a sense of how art would be like if people from another race or ethnicity were painted instead.

Great points, Jermaine! I agree about your reading of the will.i.am video. The contemporary American artist Kehinde Wiley similarly appropriates many canonical works of western art to ask just these questions. We will look at some of his works a bit later on in class. http://kehindewiley.com/
